Andy Murray has been included in Britain’s Davis Cup team for the vital promotion play-off against Hungary in Glasgow on September 16-18.
The Scot is joined by James Ward, Jamie Baker, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins for the match at the Braehead Arena. The winners will be promoted to Europe/Africa Group I in 2012. Captain Leon Smith hailed Murray’s patriotism and said the current form of doubles specialists Fleming and Hutchins at the US Open bodes well for the future. “These are all players who are producing some of their best form right now, and we’re really looking forward to the tie in front of what I’m sure will be yet another fantastic crowd at Braehead Arena,” he said. “I’m delighted that Andy will be part of the team once again, and he showed during the tie against Luxembourg in July just what it means to him to represent his country on home soil. “James and Jamie have both had some really good results this summer, and with Ross and Colin now into their second consecutive Grand Slam doubles quarter-finals, they’re establishing themselves on Tour as a top partnership, which bodes very well as we look to lay the foundations for a successful Davis Cup team moving forwards.” Murray faces Donald Young in the fourth round of the men's singles on Tuesday as he tries to reach a second final at the New York Grand Slam. British No.2 Ward expects a tough match as Britain look to bounce back from relegation in 2009. “It’s always an honour to represent your country, and it will mean so much to all of us if we can get the win and secure our promotion,” he said. “It’s what we’ve been working towards since we started this year’s Davis Cup campaign. I’m sure it will be a great atmosphere again, and no doubt we’ll have a great time, but our focus will be on winning the match against some tough opponents.” Eurosport |
