Andy Murray came from two sets down to win a breathtaking back-and-forth encounter with Robin Haase to reach the third round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
Murray was tantalisingly close to being shown the door but the three-times Grand Slam finalist came back to win 6-7 2-6 6-2 6-0 6-4 on Louis Armstrong Stadium. The Scot was frustrated in the first two sets, but responded to take the third relatively easily and went on a 13-game winning run to move double break and 4-0 up in the deciding set. However Haase, who had received treatment for a back problem after a scintillating start, responded to level at 4-4. Murray won a dramatic game on the Dutchman's serve to give himself the opportunity to serve for the match, which he duly did in more spectacular circumstances. He won his first match point when a drive from deep clipped the netcord and passed Haase, who was ready to pounce with a volley. He could not convert that, but thought he had been successful when a Haase shot was called wide while advantage up. However the world No.41 challenged and the ball did indeed catch the line - returning the scoreline to deuce. However he was to commit an unforced error in the end to seal the win for Murray after three hours and 23 minutes. Haase converted only six of 20 break-point opportunities in a truly remarkable match. He looked a world beater early on as Murray tried to restrain his anger - but their roles were suddenly reversed when the world No.4 started the third set strongly. Haase even smashed one serve return high into the crowd deliberately with a yell, but recovered his best form almost instantaneously in his late bid to snatch a famous victory. Murray will next face Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Vasek Pospisil of Canada 5-7 6-4 7-6 7-6. Eurosport / Reuters |
