Sir Alex's Manchester United face a Glasgow Rangers team he himself once played for, in a match that has all the makings of a monster 'Battle of Britain', Euro giants Real Madrid and Ajax go head to head at the Bernabeu and last year's beaten finalists Bayern Munich host Roma.
Picks of matchday 1 in the Europa League are the matches between Sevilla and Paris St Germain in Spain and PSV Eindhoven's match against Sampdoria in Holland. There's also very little between Anderlecht and Zenit St Petersburg as they prepare to face-off in Belgium, whereas Roy Hodgson's Liverpool and FC Porto have slightly more straight-forward opening games against Steaua Bucharest and Rapid Vienna respectively.
